When did you join Offshore and how did you find CrossFit?
I joined Offshore about 13 months ago. I farted around with CrossFit
for a couple years before that, but never really gave it a shot. My first
workout was the Bear Complex, so maybe that had something to do
with it. It wasn’t until I experienced Offshore through the essentials
program that I really got hooked. It was a great way to meet the
coaches, learn the movements, and learn how to approach CrossFit.
What is your favorite benchmark WOD? Your favorite lift or movement? Why? My favorite benchmark is Murph. I still haven’t tried them all, but that one will probably always be my favorite. It’s grueling, long, and we all do it on Memorial Day together to honor a fallen hero. Favorite lift is the snatch because of the challenge and how it looks when you see someone do it right!
What are your top 3 goals? My top 3 fitness goals are BW snatch, 10% body-fat, and hit a muscle-up. We’ll see which one falls first! Top 3 life-goals are: volunteer more, travel to Europe and get my company to run itself a bit better.
What is your biggest motivator? My biggest motivator has to be the group – it’s why I appreciate CrossFit so much. We’re held more accountable and the shared pain makes things a bit easier.
What is your favorite cheat meal? Duh. Ice cream and donuts. I guess that’s 2.
What is your secret party trick? My secret party trick requires 9 matches (or coins, or paperclips, or any other small objects) – and a friend with a drink and a napkin. Arrange the matches so that they are 3 x 3. Tell the other party-goers that you can tell if a match was touched and which one while you’re in the other room. Instruct someone to touch one of the matches while everyone else has a hand on that person’s shoulder (or back, or ass, or whatever) while you’re away – and then leave the room. Your friend will have noticed which one was touched, and will place his/her drink down on the corresponding section of their napkin: touched upper right corner match – drink on upper right corner of napkin; touched middle match – drink in middle of napkin; touched no match – drink off of napkin – you get the idea. You’ll only a couple tries before someone catches on and tries to sequester everyone. You can say something like “I need everybody’s energy for this to work” or some such story. People will think you’re possessed. Good times.
What is something we don’t know about you? I have a company that does balloon lighting for movies and television. They’re literally big, floating lights. I was in a couple of bands in San Diego in the 90’s.
When can people find you at the gym most days? On a perfect day, I’ll make the 5 o’clock Oly, followed by the 6pm CrossFit. More often, though I’ll catch either the 6 or 7. Sometimes noon.
